Position Description

The Equipment Operator will be part of operational project teams that deliver unparalleled service in residuals management. They will conduct application of residuals for land fertilization, reclamation, and soil mixing.

Based near Clinton BC, the position involves seasonal work from May to November and at times, a variable work schedule depending on weather. For the right person, this could develop into a longer-term, full-time position over time. A commitment to health and safety, a proactive and positive attitude, and a creative problem-solving mindset are key to success in this role.


Functions and Responsibilities

The Equipment Operator will have the following responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy equipment (loader, excavator, articulated rock truck agriculture tractors and spreaders, etc.) at SYLVIS project locations, as needed. This may require travel to remote sites in Alberta and BC, but will be primarily based near Clinton, BC.
  • Ensure all personal and team-related health and safety requirements are met.
  • Maintain an orderly and clean worksite.
  • Complete task tracking, equipment logging and daily documentation.
  • Supervise contractors when required.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on SYLVIS equipment as necessary.
  • Supervised by the Fleet Manager, overseeing your growth and training.
  • Carry out additional tasks as directed by the Fleet Manager and Project Manager(s), which may include general labour, site maintenance, and light equipment or machine operations.

Skills and Experience

At SYLVIS, we rely on technical expertise, exceptional customer service, and a team-based approach to project delivery. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined and has the following:

  • 3+ years’ experience operating heavy equipment, with relevant certifications.
  • Diverse knowledge of farm and heavy equipment, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Experience in one or more of the following industries: agriculture, construction, land reclamation, or forestry.
  • Adequate physical fitness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow direct instructions from managers and supervisors.
  • Supportive towards sustainability initiatives and a willingness to learn about residuals and their best management practices.
  • Willingness to work in a flexible and variable work capacity.
  • Willingness to travel and work alone (a valid driver’s license is required).
  • Strong collaboration skills to work well with other team members, clients, and contractors.
  • A proactive, can-do attitude with a focus on maximizing productivity and meeting deadlines.

Additional assets include:

  • A Class 1/3 Driver’s license or Class 5 with Air Endorsement
  • Level 1 First Aid
  • Educational or employment history in forestry, construction, environment, or agriculture
