Job Type: Full-time, permanent

Hours of Work: Monday - Friday

Wage: 8-step grid ranging from $71,283 - $96,957 based on experience

 

Elementary – Intermediate Teachers support the intellectual, educational and social development of students. Teachers plan and deliver curriculum using various learning methods to ensure a high quality, safe and engaging learning environment that honours Secwepemc traditional culture and values. Elementary Teachers support the mental, physical, social and spiritual development of all students and help them to foster a sense of belonging and identity.

 

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Principal. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to students, members, employees, and general matters of SIB.

 

Program and Student Support

  • Supports Teaching in Grades K/1/2/3/4/5 in some key subject areas including lesson planning, delivery and evaluation of the classroom program.
  • Delivers planned curriculum using a variety of formats including whole class instruction, small group instruction, 1:1 instruction and field trips. Remains mindful of the diverse learning needs of students and provides flexibility in teaching styles that support the class and individual learners.
  • Creates lesson plans that align with BC Ministry of Education grade-level requirements.
  • Connects with students and works to understand their needs, interests and concerns. Helps students to recognize their own emotions and the emotions and needs of others. Helps students to self-regulate behavior.
  • Uses appropriate and effective classroom management skills and techniques to keep students focused, attentive and engaged. Empower and excite students to learn.
  • Evaluates student progresses using formative assessment methods to monitor learning and identify areas of strength and where improvement is needed. Provides students with feedback.
  • Administers any required standardized testing.
  • Assigns and evaluates home work.
  • Directs and guides the activities of the Teachers Assistants.
  • Prepares and implements additional support and/or Individual Education Plan for students requiring extra help. Works closely with special education assistants to support student learning and well being.
  • Works to connect Skeetchestn, culture and language, through programs and activities.
  • Prepares Standards-Based report cards for each term (3) and participates in parent/teacher interviews. Ensures ongoing parent communication.
  • Consistently monitors the learning environment and its impact on student learning.
  • Supervises students on an ongoing basis (inside and outside the classroom) to ensure their safety. Provides supervision before and after school, recess and lunch according to the supervision schedule.

Administration

  • Plans and prepares annual curriculum, special projects and activities.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
  • Plans and coordinates special events, and school celebrations.
  • Participates in staff meetings.
  • Participates in extra curricular activities related to the school.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities.
  • Set up and takedown of the classroom space at the beginning and end of the year and complete annual inventory.

 

Other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Bachelor of Education Degree and valid B.C. Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching experience at elementary school level is an asset.
  • Experience working with an Indigenous community.
  • Experience working with individuals with special needs.
  • Completion of and possession of valid CPR and First Aid Certificate and up to date immunizations.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
  • Current B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License.

  • Enjoys working with and supporting children and youth including students with special education needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with students and parents from diverse backgrounds; ability to quickly build rapport and trust.
  • Cultural sensitivity and knowledge of historical trauma impacting Indigenous people.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Empathetic, patient and approachable.
  • Well-developed conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of B.C. Curriculum and relevant laws and regulations.
  • Ability to use and keep up-to-date with various technologies for teaching.
  • Strong knowledge of child development and behavior.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, families, community members and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office.
  • Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the school, primarily in classroom environment. Occasional travel for field trips or to attend meetings or training is required.
