Description

The Youth & Recreation Coordinator develops, implements, and evaluates programs for youth and community recreation/cultural activities for all ages. Delivers programs through arts-based, health and well-being, cultural and outdoor education, and sports/fitness activities.  Works with the Social Development team, to engage community members and encourage their active participation.

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Manager, Social Development.  Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of SIB.

Program Planning and Delivery

  • Acts as a role model for young people.
  • Builds strong interpersonal relationships with youth one on one and in group settings; provides support based on individual and group needs.  Gets youth involved and active.
  • Helps youth to navigate resources that are available to them as needed.  Works with Social Development Manager and Social Workers in cases of youth at risk.
  • Collaborates with Social Development Team and Skeetchestn Community School to provide and/or coordinate educational support for youth around spiritual/emotional/mental and physical wellness, which include the areas of substance misuse, mental health, life skills, sexual health etc.
  • Plans, schedules and delivers youth program for youth aged 13-19.
  • Plans, schedules and delivers after school program for children aged 6-12.
  • Delivers additional programming during spring break and summer break.
  • Participates in the hiring of Youth Assistant for summer programming. Plans and assigns tasks and supervises daily activities of the Youth Assistants.  
  • Sets up all activities and events (room or gym set up, shop for supplies, makes snacks).
  • Plans special youth, family and community events (i.e. Halloween).
  • Plans, schedules, and supervises regular sports and recreational activities for all age groups.
  • Coordinates transportation to and from events including hiring and scheduling drivers.
  • Schedules and supervises volunteers and casual employees to fulfil duties of Chaperones or Responsible Adults for program activities. 
  • Liaises with Skeetchestn Community School, District Schools, RCMP, funding agencies and external partners and resources.
  • Develops, publishes, and distributes monthly calendars for recreational programs and social events taking place.
  • Engages community and youth to ensure programming is meeting needs.

Administration

  • Research funding opportunities, writes proposals and applies for grants. 
  • Submits reports to funders as required.
  • Administers the Youth and Recreation program budget.
  • Provides regular updates and reports to the Manager, Social Development. Prepares activity reports, and program impact updates as requested.
  • Develops and maintains clear, accurate and orderly program files and records. 

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Grade 12 and post-secondary certificate or other training related to youth programs, youth social work, community recreation, etc.  Training through Right to Play or willing to obtain.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth programs and community recreation programs preferably within a First Nation community.
  • Experience researching and writing grant proposals.
  • Current First Aid Level 1 Certification.
  • Food Safe Certification.
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check (vulnerable sector).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Enjoys working with youth and families and contributing to their health and wellness.
  • Ability to develop and implement a variety of recreational programs and events for youth, children and families.   
  • Ability to facilitate group activities as well as work with youth one to one.
  • Ability to build positive relationships built on trust.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills including conflict resolution.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and understanding.  Able to demonstrate respect and caring without judgement.
  • Knowledge of the history of Indigenous people in Canada and the impact of historical trauma.
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, community members and co-workers.
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office.
  • Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.
